Before Dealing With
A1 Used Restaurant Equipment
(An unhappy story of a "Pig in a Poke" Chair Deal.)
Here is our story.
Our church has been slowly giving money to buy chairs for our fellowship hall. We wanted to replace our old metal folding chairs with nice, padded, stacking chairs.
While searching for a company online we found the site for A1 Used Restaurant Equipment.
Noticing some pictures (close-up shots) of like-new chairs, I called the toll-free number. Talking to the representative, he asked me to view the pictures of chairs on a particular location. (Erwin, TN) I gave him the same story, that we were planning to purchase new but thought used chairs in good condition would allow us to get more for our money.
As you can see, when they have a good product they show a close-up.
But when they do not, they show a far shot that cannot detail the poor quality of the items.
The representative told me they were good chairs. That they were gray color with vinyl seats and fabric backs. And that they had 100 chairs to sell. He offered the price of $10, this was five less than a new chair, so we ordered them. I did think it was odd for him to require a signature on a faxed credit card receipt, now I know why.
These chairs are appalling. I was devastated to see the shipment on the truck. The chair’s condition were more than used, they were unserviceable. Here is a list of my complaints:
The chairs are not the color I ordered and was promised.
The chair fabric is faded.
The chair fabric is stained with grease.
The chairs (most if not all) are bent.
The chairs paint is chipped and rusting.
I was shipped 94 of one kind and 5 ugly brown ones but ordered 100.

To Customer Service Representative:
My name is Laurel Johnson, my husband is the pastor of Liberty Baptist Church in Alexander City, AL. We received chairs that we purchased from your company this week and were not happy about the condition of what we purchased. My husband spoke to the sales rep. in Erwin, TN. and specifically asked him what the condition of the chairs were before he agreed to buy them. According to the sales rep they were in great shape. Well I guess that is subject to private interpetation, when we received the chairs they were very stained, chipping and bent and they smell like old Mexican Food. We never would have bought these chairs if we knew their condition.
This was a purchase for our church fellowship hall, the church members have been giving to a chair fund for months now so that we could buy new chairs. We thought after seeing your web site that we might be able to get a better quality chair for the same price of a new chair if it was used. Apparently this is not the case, we feel as if we have inappropriately used our church's money to buy chairs that I wouldn't have taken if someone had given me. Now we have to take them all apart, try to clean them and paint them. This of course will take much time and effort and additional money to repaint them.
My husband spoke again to the sales rep in TN to tell him of our dissapointment in the shipment, my husband was told that all that could be done was for a refund of the 5 brown chairs that we did not order but apparently paid for, we only received 95 of the 100 chairs that we did order, we feel that this entire situation is unacceptable.
I am requesting a refund, not the full price but something that is fair to our church for the trust that was put in your company that we have now lost. Please consider my request, and thank you for your time.
I called the person who sold me the chairs to see if he sent the wrong chairs. He did not seem surprised when I told him I was not happy. He informed me that they would refund the amount for the brown chairs but that was all.
I plan to call the owner today. Lord willing, we will get a happy resolution to this mater.
As it stands, we must:
Disassemble the chairs, clean the cushions, recolor or recover the backs, paint the frames.
I wish I had not ordered from this company!
I wish I had ordered new chairs.
I believe this company misrepresented a product, shipped an unacceptable replacement and intentionally mislead me when ordering.
There website touts a slogan "Full Service. Full Satisfaction."
I am not so sure!
Ever heard of a "Pig in a Poke"? Know who your dealing with. Know what your getting.
UPDATE: 03/07/2005 Reported this transaction to the BBB Better Business Bureau of TN.
UPDATE: 03/31/2005 The owner of the business will not respond to my calls. They have not refunded any money even for the brown chairs.
I have spent more money on fixing these chairs than the cost of new ones. UPDATE 08-07-2007
